What is virtual production?

Virtual Production employs a combination of technologies to place actors in to photorealistic 3D environments in real-time, typically using Unreal Engine.

There are two main approaches to VP:

LED Volumes – which use large arrays of special use LED panels to display a background 3D environment that is seen by a tracked camera – whose position drives the view of the background. This is also called ICVFX (in-camera VFX).

Green screens – in which the output of the camera is chromakeyed in real time and composited with the 3D environment, the resulting image being seen on monitors.  That image can be used directly (e.g. for live broadcast), or a post production workflow can be used for even higher quality.

While each method has its technical benefits and detriments, LED Volumes are typically considerably more expensive.  At Indie VP we focus on green screen virtual production.

Previz 
Our portable systems can be used for previz in most locations, capturing high res raw footage along with camera tracking and lens data that can then used for visual effects.  
This can also be used for AR applications, e.g. inserting a CG character or environment in realtime.

Live Events
We can offer live production with multiple cameras within the same digital environment, along with traditional camera switching plus realtime encoding and streaming, up to 4K HEVC.

Perhaps the most important aspect of VP is the digital environments.   There are many pre-built environments available, making it very affordable; or we can help with custom builds.
